Rodri left Manchester City for Barcelona in August, and two of the best young defensive midfielders in the world felt it within weeks. City paid €95m for Ayyoub Bouaddi as his long-term successor; Barcelona already had their own academy anchor, Marc Bernal, and bought a Ballon d'Or winner to stand in front of him. Six Premier League games in, Bouaddi has thirty-two league minutes, all of them off the bench, and Bernal has watched Rodri start Barcelona's last two league games. The young 6s who play every week are somewhere else, and every one of them does the job in a pair. Below are eight of the best, grouped by what this season has actually given them. (Figures as of 12 October 2026.)

The Chain

01

Ayyoub Bouaddi — The €95m Successor Who Is Waiting

Manchester City. Nineteen.

Bouaddi arrived from Lille on 26 August for €95m plus €5m in add-ons, on a contract to 2031, and every report of the deal described the same job: the long-term answer to Rodri. He came with a summer to back the price, five starts in Morocco's six World Cup matches at eighteen.

By then City had already rebuilt the position, and not around one player. Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest in July and Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on deadline day, and in the last two league games they have started side by side at the base of a 4-2-3-1, with Bouaddi among the substitutes. His Premier League season is three appearances off the bench worth thirty-two minutes, the latest ten of them at Anfield on 11 October, replacing Fernández in a 3-0 win. The cups tell the other half: a full ninety minutes and an assist in the EFL Cup beside Mateo Kovačić, and seventy-five minutes in the Champions League. He also appears on our list of the best young central midfielders.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 80 (DRI 79, PHY 76) — the game still lists him at Lille. Real-level: thirty-two Premier League minutes behind £241m of midfield. Tier: Elite-in-Waiting.

02

Marc Bernal — Three Starts, Then Rodri

FC Barcelona. Nineteen.

Bernal came through La Masia, tore a cruciate ligament in August 2024 and was out for 383 days. This summer he looked like Barcelona's answer at the base of midfield. Then Rodri arrived on 18 August: €60m to City, up to €16.5m more in add-ons, a four-year contract, a Ballon d'Or winner at thirty.

The handover was not immediate. Bernal started three early league games as the anchor while Rodri came off the bench to build his fitness. Since then the order has flipped. Rodri has started the last two league games in the middle of Barcelona's midfield three; Bernal played four minutes at Sevilla and came off the bench against Getafe on 10 October. His league season stands at eight appearances, three starts, 311 minutes and two assists. He was on our Spain list before any of this happened.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 78 (PHY 79, DRI 77). Real-level: the right player in the wrong summer. Tier: Elite-in-Waiting.

The Ones Who Play

The four players below have something Bouaddi and Bernal do not: a place in the team on a Saturday. They share something else, too. Every one of them starts in a two-man base, the double pivot, rather than alone in front of the defence, the way Rodri played for most of his years at City and plays now for Barcelona.

League minutes this season for the seven players based in Europe, as of 12 October 2026. Lucas Silva's Argentine season is covered below.

The First Deep Cut — Alexis Vossah

Toulouse. Eighteen.

Vossah was born in Alfortville, south-east of Paris, came through Toulouse's academy and made his professional debut at seventeen, in a 1-0 win over Nice in August 2025. He is a holding midfielder who can drop in at centre-back, and he is noted for three things: his passing, his strength, and the way he keeps the ball under pressure.

This season he has five Ligue 1 appearances, three starts and 240 minutes, and on 10 October he started at Monaco in Toulouse's two-man base beside Cristian Cásseres. He is in and out of the side, which at eighteen is the right place to be.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 71 (PHY 74, DEF 69) — a first card that rates the body before the brain. Real-level: three Ligue 1 starts at eighteen. Tier: Raw Gem.

04

Noah Sadiki — Six Starts Beside Xhaka

Sunderland. Twenty-one.

Sadiki has started all six of Sunderland's Premier League games, every one of them next to Granit Xhaka at the base of the midfield, for 502 minutes, plus ninety more in the Europa League. He has no goals or assists yet, and that is not the job. Xhaka carries the passing; Sadiki covers the ground around him.

FC 27 rates him 80, level with Bouaddi. One of them has played 502 league minutes this season. The other has played thirty-two.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 80 (DRI 80, PAC 79). Real-level: an every-week Premier League starter at twenty-one. Tier: Ready Now.

05

Kobbie Mainoo — From Unused at the World Cup to September's Best

Manchester United. Twenty-one.

Mainoo went to the World Cup with England and did not play a minute. He has answered with five starts in six Premier League games, 447 minutes and an assist, all of it in the two-man base of United's 4-2-3-1, and the club's player of the month award for September.

He is the reminder that the double pivot is not a lesser job. Mainoo's game was never about standing still in front of a back four; it is about receiving under pressure and turning out of it, and a partner beside him gives him the freedom to try.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 81 (DRI 83, DEF 78) — the card has caught up with the player. Real-level: a starter again, and September's best at his club. Tier: Ready Now.

06

Lewis Miley — The Card Says 8. The Team Sheet Says 6.

Newcastle United. Twenty.

FC 27 lists Miley as a central midfielder. Newcastle use him deeper: all five of his Premier League appearances have been starts in their two-man base, for 399 minutes, and he has filled in at right-back when the team needed him. He has no goals or assists yet. What he gives Newcastle is a passer who stays calm with players around him.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 77 (DEF 76, PAS 76) — rated as an 8, used as a 6. Real-level: five Premier League starts at twenty. Tier: Ready Now.

“City did not replace Rodri with one player. They replaced him with two, and the teenager bought to be the long-term answer is waiting for one of them to tire.”

The Waiting Room

07

Aleksandar Stanković — Bought Back for €23m

Inter. Twenty-one.

Stanković is the son of Dejan Stanković, who won the treble with Inter in 2010, and he grew up in the club's academy. Inter sold him to Club Brugge in 2025 with a buy-back clause, watched him make 39 league appearances in Belgium last season with six goals and two assists, and in June paid €23m to bring him home on a five-year contract.

So far the return is forty-four Serie A minutes in three substitute appearances, twenty-nine of them against Parma on 10 October, with Inter's 3-5-2 built around a settled midfield three. Buying a player back before a rival can is a statement about the future. The minutes come later.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 76 (DEF 74, PAS 72). Real-level: a €23m statement, forty-four minutes so far. Tier: Watchlist.

08

The Second Deep Cut — Lucas Silva

River Plate. Nineteen.

In Argentina the position is called the 5, and River Plate have a young one. Lucas Silva was promoted from the reserves this year before he had even signed a professional contract, and made the shortest debut in the club's history on 25 April against Aldosivi, coming on with twelve seconds left. Weeks later he came off the bench in the Copa Sudamericana and crossed for Lucas Martínez Quarta's late winner against Red Bull Bragantino, and he has since scored his first senior goal, against Blooming.

He has been on the bench for River's last three league games, behind more experienced midfielders. At River, that is where a nineteen-year-old 5 starts.

Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 71 (DEF 68, DRI 68) — a rating for a player the game has barely seen. Real-level: a cup assist and a first goal in his first months. Tier: Raw Gem.

What the team sheets say

01The lone 6 is a veteran's job. Barcelona gave it to a thirty-year-old Ballon d'Or winner. None of the young players here who start every week does it alone.
02Money buys a place in the queue, not a place in the team. Bouaddi cost €95m and has thirty-two league minutes. Mainoo and Miley came through their clubs' academies and start every week.
03The game rates the role, not the job. FC 27 calls Miley a central midfielder; Newcastle play him in front of the defence. The card describes last season. The team sheet describes this week.

Quick Reference

Who replaced Rodri at Manchester City?

In the league, two senior signings: Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, who have started together at the base of a 4-2-3-1. Ayyoub Bouaddi, bought from Lille for €95m as the long-term successor, has 32 Premier League minutes as of 12 October 2026.

How much did Barcelona pay for Rodri?

€60m to Manchester City, plus up to €16.5m in add-ons, on a four-year contract confirmed on 18 August 2026.

Is Marc Bernal playing for Barcelona?

Less than before Rodri settled in: eight La Liga appearances, three starts and 311 minutes as of 12 October 2026, with Rodri starting the last two league games.

Which young defensive midfielders on this list have played the most league minutes?

Noah Sadiki (502), Kobbie Mainoo (447) and Lewis Miley (399), as of 12 October 2026. All three start in a two-man midfield base.

What is a double pivot?

Two holding midfielders side by side in front of the defence, as in a 4-2-3-1, instead of one player alone at the base of a midfield three.

The verdict. Rodri's move did not open a door for a young 6; it shut two. City bought Bouaddi to inherit the role and then rebuilt it for two senior players. Barcelona had Bernal and bought the original. The young holding midfielders actually learning the job this autumn are doing it in pairs, at Sunderland, Manchester United, Newcastle and Toulouse. Follow Bouaddi's cup starts and Bernal's rotation through the winter: that is where the next lone 6 gets made.
