Portugal's production line has never been the question. What has changed is how long the country gets to keep what it makes. Of the nine young Portuguese footballers on this page, seven are already employed outside Portugal — in England, Italy, France, Germany, Greece and Saudi Arabia. The two still at home are nineteen and twenty. Sporting sold two of the nine to the same English club, and one of those two has since been loaned to a French side that the English club's owners also control. Porto sold the one they were supposed to keep.
Geovany Quenda — Sold at Seventeen, Arrived at Nineteen
Chelsea. Nineteen. Twenty-seven Premier League minutes.
Chelsea agreed to buy Quenda when he was seventeen and took delivery this summer, signing him to a contract that runs to 2034 — an eight-year commitment to a player who had not yet kicked a ball for them. He broke into Sporting's first team at seventeen, scored against Porto in the Super Cup to become their youngest ever scorer, ahead of a record previously held by Simão and Cristiano Ronaldo, and was used as both a winger and a wing-back.
Since arriving in London he has played twenty-seven minutes in two appearances off the bench: eight at Fulham in August and nineteen against Brentford on 18 September. His card is built on 86 pace and 79 dribbling with 41 defending, which is a wide attacker rather than the wing-back Sporting sometimes made him.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 76 (PAC 86, DRI 79) — rated like a starter, employed as a Chelsea substitute. Real-level: a contract to 2034 and twenty-seven minutes. Tier: Elite-in-Waiting.
Rodrigo Mora — The One Porto Could Not Keep
AS Roma. Nineteen.
Mora was supposed to be the exception: the Portuguese teenager a big club builds around instead of selling, on a Porto contract that ran to 2030. On 19 August he joined Roma on a permanent transfer, with Porto keeping a share of his economic rights. He made his Serie A debut on 5 September against Atalanta and has a goal and 171 minutes since.
The card tells you what he still needs: 80 dribbling and 75 passing sitting on top of a physical rating of 41. He is a technician who has not been built yet, and the question of where that happens is now Rome's rather than Porto's.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 77 (DRI 80, PAS 75, PHY 41) — all technique, no frame yet. Real-level: a Serie A goal at nineteen. Tier: Elite-in-Waiting.
Sporting sold Geovany Quenda and Dário Essugo to Chelsea. Essugo could not get going in London, and on deadline day this September Chelsea loaned him to Strasbourg — the Ligue 1 club Chelsea's ownership also controls, where he joined his Chelsea team-mate Filip Jorgensen. A Portuguese midfielder now moves from Lisbon to London to Alsace without ever leaving the same balance sheet. We took that club apart in our report on the youngest squad in Europe.
The First Deep Cut — João Simões
Sporting CP. Nineteen.
Sporting sold the two names everyone had heard of and kept this one. Simões is a left-footed defensive midfielder from Portimão who already has a Liga Portugal title and a Taça de Portugal, and he is in Sporting's Champions League squad this season wearing number eight. He is also the one nobody has seen lately: a five-month injury kept him out, and after a run-out for Sporting's B team he is expected back around the trip to Braga on 9 October, the only midfielder left from last season in a midfield Sporting have rebuilt.
The game rates him 70, the lowest on this page, and that is the most reliable signal on it — ratings follow exposure, and a nineteen-year-old who has spent five months injured has had almost none.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 70 (PAS 69, DEF 61) — rated as a squad player, listed in a Champions League eight. Real-level: back from five months out in October. Tier: Raw Gem.
“Portugal has not stopped producing footballers. It has stopped being the place where they become them.”
Martim Fernandes — The Last One at Porto
FC Porto. Twenty.
A right-back with 82 pace and 71 defending, and two trophies already on his record. With Mora gone he is the only one of the nine Porto still employ, and he ended September with a worry: he went off with a calf injury against Benfica on 26 September and was withdrawn from the Portugal under-21 squad, though the injury is not believed to be serious.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 76 (PAC 82, DEF 71) — a modern full-back's shape. Real-level: two trophies before twenty-one. Tier: Ready Now.
Dário Essugo — Lisbon, London, Alsace
Strasbourg, on loan from Chelsea. Twenty-one.
The game has him at Chelsea, which was true for a year and produced almost nothing: a serious thigh injury in September 2025 required surgery and he never established himself. Chelsea made him available this summer, a move to Hull collapsed on deadline day, and he ended up at Strasbourg on a season-long loan.
His card carries 76 physical, level with Gustavo Sá for the most on this list, with 74 defending underneath 69 passing. That is a destroyer, and destroyers are the one midfield profile that a settled Premier League team almost never gives to a twenty-one-year-old.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 75 (PHY 76, DEF 74) — a specialist in the role clubs trust least to the young. Real-level: a year lost to injury, now restarting in Ligue 1. Tier: Watchlist.
Afonso Moreira — Eight Goals, Eleven Assists, and a Move to Germany
Bayer Leverkusen. Twenty-one.
He left Lyon in June for Bayer Leverkusen on a contract running to 2031, after a season in which he made thirty-seven appearances across Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Europa League and produced eight goals and eleven assists — the most productive season anyone on this page has had. A year ago the game rated him 67. EA FC 27 has caught up with the season and the move: Leverkusen, and 78, eleven points higher and the top rating on this page.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 78 (PAC 89, DRI 78) — the best output here, and now the best card. Real-level: nineteen goal contributions last season. Tier: Ready Now.
Gustavo Sá — Bought by Forest, Sent to Piraeus
Olympiacos, on loan from Nottingham Forest. Twenty-one.
Sá captained Famalicão, played 120 first-team games for them, and left this summer by the same kind of route that took Essugo to Alsace. Nottingham Forest bought him in late July and loaned him straight to Olympiacos — two clubs with the same owner, Evangelos Marinakis. He scored in a 4-0 win at Larissa on 2 September and is in Olympiacos's Champions League squad.
His card is the only one on this page with nothing below 70: 75 pace, 75 passing, 75 dribbling, 70 defending and 76 physical. That is a midfielder built to do everything, which is exactly the profile a multi-club owner can move to wherever the minutes are.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 76 (PAS 75, DRI 75, PHY 76) — no weak facet on the card. Real-level: a Champions League squad at twenty-one. Tier: Ready Now.
Mateus Mané — The Biggest Jump on the Page
Wolves. Nineteen.
Mané could have been English: he has played for England at under-18 level and for Portugal's under-21s. He turned nineteen on 16 September and is a regular in Wolves' Championship side — seven appearances and 498 minutes this season, the most recent 73 minutes in a 1-0 win over West Brom on 20 September. He is still waiting for his first goal of the season.
A year ago the game rated him 60. EA FC 27 has him at 74, fourteen points up and the biggest jump on this page, with 77 pace and 76 dribbling.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 74 (PAC 77, DRI 76) — the game has noticed. Real-level: a Championship regular at nineteen. Tier: Watchlist.
The Second Deep Cut — Roger Fernandes
Al-Ittihad. Twenty.
The road none of the others took. Roger Fernandes was born in Guinea-Bissau, raised through Portugal's youth teams, and left Braga for Saudi Arabia in September 2025 — an unusual destination for a nineteen-year-old with European options. A year on, he is still in Jeddah.
He carries 90 pace, the highest figure on this page, and 78 dribbling. Whether Jeddah was a detour or a shortcut is the most genuinely open question on this list.
Scout Gamer Read — EA FC 27: 75 (PAC 90, DRI 78) — elite acceleration, unproven altitude. Real-level: a second season in the Saudi Pro League. Tier: Watchlist.
Quick Reference
How many of these players are outside Portugal?
Seven of nine — at Chelsea, Roma, Strasbourg, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympiacos, Wolves and Al-Ittihad.
Who is the youngest?
Mateus Mané of Wolves, who turned nineteen on 16 September.
Who has the highest rating?
Afonso Moreira at 78 in EA FC 27, up from 67 in EA FC 26.
Which of them are still in Portugal?
João Simões at Sporting and Martim Fernandes at Porto.
The two clubs that used to be Europe's most reliable sellers have reached the same answer. Sporting sold Quenda and Essugo to the same buyer; Porto sold Mora to Roma in August. Each kept exactly one: Sporting a nineteen-year-old midfielder coming back from five months out, Porto a twenty-year-old right-back with two trophies. The question is no longer which of them keeps its talent. It is how long either can.
